BIO:

Legendary jazz pianist Harvey Diamond and former street singer and jazz choir soloist John Lentz met at the Vermont Jazz Center summer workshops and forged a musical relationship during the Pandemic. Playing together privately and weekly for almost four years, they discovered a unique approach to jazz music. Eventually, they recorded an album of piano/voice duos, entitled “how strange the road should be so easy,” released in early 2025 on Montreal-based Orchard of Pomegranates Records. They are bringing their sound to Mad Monkfish in Cambridge, MA on Thursday, August 21 at 7pm for a rare live performance that celebrates their recording.

Early accolades for the album:

“Few [jazz singers] get under your skin the way Lentz does….his voice is so disarming, honest, and human that you trust its emotional authenticity.”

“Diamond’s gift [is] for getting deep inside a great song and elaborating and enlarging it without ever abandoning its essence.”

“…rarer than perfection…”

-Thomas Conrad, Stereophile Magazine

“Together the two make a sound that can seem dreamy before the musical surprises start.”

-Noah Schaffer, WBUR Public Broadcasting

“Diamond sparkles….Lentz [is] confident….Firm friendship forms.”

-George W. Harris, Jazz Weekly
