The After Times

Mad Monkfish Concert Series

May 25, 2024

4pm

Personnel:

Malcolm Campbell - piano

Josiah Reibstein - bass

Joe Musacchia - drums

Joe Musacchia, Josiah Reibstein, and Malcolm Campbell are all from Lexington, MA and currently continue to reside in the Boston area. They have been playing together since middle school in various ensembles and musical occurrences, and have remained close friends throughout decades.

All three are active contributors to the Boston/Cambridge community, musically, artistically, and otherwise. Malcolm is a graduate of the Harvard/NEC double degree program and continues to pursue his academic research as a PHD candidate while performing in his free time. Joe is an on-call videographer and photographer, working with many luminaries in the Boston jazz scene and beyond – and also is a first-call drummer for many, many musical groups. Josiah is an active full-time free-lancer on multiple instruments, leading and playing as a sideman in a variety of ensembles. He also leads the Downtown Boston Brass, which performs several days a week in the Downtown Crossing area of Boston through the Business Improvement District.

Malcolm is a resident of Belmont, Joe a resident of Woburn, and Josiah a resident of Salem.

The After Times formed during the COVID lockdown of 2020, when the three childhood friends decided to get together in their respective yards on a semi-regular basis to play music. What started as a loose session for stretching out on standards turned into a workshop for original music, and eventually, when restrictions began to open up again, a working band.

Though it is the brainchild of bassist Josiah Reibstein, the After Times seeks to represent all three members of the trio equally, showcasing original compositions from each musician as well as interpretations of jazz standards and arrangements of cover songs.

The After Times has performed at the Gulu Gulu Café, the Bebop, Boston, the Creative Music Series at Virtuosity, and French’s Point in Maine. The individual performers have played at the Regattabar, Zuzu, The Lilypad, the Burren, the Beehive, Backbeat Brewery, Aeronaut Brewery, and many other venues in New England and beyond.

The musical style of the After Times can best be described as contemporary jazz piano trio, with heavy influences from Brad Mehldau, Avishai Cohen, Ray Brown, Vijay Iyer, and Wayne Shorter.
