BIO:
“..his latest release “Daybreak” develops his voice even further with some stunning compositions and wonderful musicianship..Brust has a crystalline sound, imbued with a life force, vitality and exuberance that is both compelling and exciting..” -ukvibe.org
“the young alto saxophonist Nicholas Brust matches technical fire with emotional warmth and unhurried reflection..” -artfuse.org
Wielding a unique, incisive but soulful voice as an improviser and composer, Boston-based jazz saxophonist Nicholas Brust (pronounced “Bruhst”) has established his voice in the world of modern improvised music. He has found his niche both as a bandleader and a sideman, taking advantage of the numerous textures and combinations available in the traditional jazz small-group format. Brust has performed and/or recorded with numerous highly acclaimed musicians, including Lage Lund, Gilad Hekselman (with bassist Jon Latona), Mark Ferber (with pianist Francesca Prihasti), The Peter Silver Big Band (sharing the stage with Roy Hargrove, Jimmy Owens, Steve Wilson and others), guitarist Ben Eunson, Kristina Koller (appearing in her Quintet at the 2020 NYC Winter Jazz Fest), and many others. Nicholas is currently on faculty at New England Conservatory as part of its Prep/Continuing Education division in addition to being an Artslink Teaching Artist for Berklee College of Music’s City Music program.
Nicholas released his sophomore album, Daybreak, with Outside In Music in February 2023. Featured as part of Jazziz Editors' Choice, the album was heralded as "...at once completely familiar and yet also brand new; imbued with tradition while still breaking new ground” (ukvibe.org). Jeome Wilson from All About Jazz said “Nicholas…writes strong melodies [which] his playing cuts through with ease and grace on this album..."
Nicholas has a Master of Music in jazz performance from New England Conservatory as well as a Bachelor of Music in jazz studies and music education from the Eastman School of Music.
